We all know that Squares are from Mars and Circles are from Venus. Or if you didn't, there is something wrong with you because it's obvious that anything with sharp edges is masculine and violent like the god of war, whereas curvy smooth things are feminine and stormy like the planet Venus.

As we all remember from 5th grade history, Athenians were the civilized conquerors, the reason the Greeks are remembered to this day as the founders of western thought. Spartans, on the other hand, threw weak babies into pits (we're told), slept on beds of sharp rocks, and generally eschewed scholarship in favor of scrapping.

As John Kerry recently let slip, America is a mix of circles and squares, Athenians and Spartans, the educated children of privilege tasked with speculating on metaphysics on the one hand, and the boorish children of the working class who volunteered to drop heavy things on foreigners to avoid their burger-flipping fates on the other.

Cleft in twain? Torn asunder? Is America becoming... queer? Or can Athenians and Spartans coexist? Is there a bit of the square and the circle in all of us? Does asking yourself that question make you uncomfortable?

In fact there is a lovely symmetry between circles and squares whereby if you put a circle squarely inside a square, and put that square squarely inside a circle, the bigger circle will be exactly twice the size of the smaller one. If you took that big circle and once again placed it squarely inside a new bigger square you might begin to notice a pattern. And that pattern may or may not resemble the pattern you would find to exist between circles' and squares' three dimensional cousins, speheres and cubes.

Don't even get me started on hyperspheres and hypercubes, because I would be totally lost at that point--see, I'm not perfectly Athenian--at some point the Spartan in me just wants to kick the sphere around for a while, or throw it hard at an unsuspecting Athenian.

So be sure to nurture your circles and polish your squares. And don't use olive oil when cooking with high temperatures--only a Cretan would be so gauche.

Replying to this op-ed in today's Crimson: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=515314#

They have not posted my comment yet, but here's hoping!

Re: Less Faith, More Reason

It is amazing that Professor Pinker could raise so many valid points on the value of scientific literacy and the dichotomy of faith versus reason while failing to address, among the other socio-historical allusions in his piece, the greatest example that illustrates all of his points.

No issue paints the interaction between science, reason, faith, and their impact on society in more stark relief than the events of September 11, 2001. One faith in particular is held responsible for the destruction of the three towers (yes, three) at the World Trade Center, and while we would expect such a significant accusation to be based on sound science and reasonable standards of evidence, such is not at all the case.

Honest scientists are hard-pressed to explain, for example, the fact that pools of molten steel were discovered in the rubble piles of WTC 1 and 2 (the twin towers) and WTC 7 (the 47 story building that collapsed at 5:20 p.m. though no plane hit it and it suffered minimal damage from the collapse of the towers.)

Jet fuel burns at a maximum of 1200 degrees fahrenheit in an open fire, and 1800 under the most ideal controlled conditions. Steel, however, melts at 2750 degrees fahrenheit, no less.

Galileo's law of falling bodies, moreover, tells us the rate at which a body in free fall will accelerate towrds the ground. The fact that the top of each tower fell through hundreds of feet of intact structure at very nearly the exact rate we would expect from free fall through empty air suggests that something other than gravity was involved in the collapses, a fact buttressed by the many eyewitness accounts, from firefighters and other rescue workers, of powerful explosions before, during, and after each tower was struck by the respective airplanes.

Perhaps the problem with faith is not that it is, as Prof. Pinker suggests, solely a euphemism for religion, but a method by which people can avoid having to back up their beliefs and opinions with hard scientific fact.

Which brings us to the real crux of the crisis in academia today--the moral and ethical failure of scientists, who know full well that the official account of the twin towers' and building 7's collapse is a physical impossibility, to take their responsibility as public intellectuals seriously.

I would challenge Professor Pinker to rise to the occasion and stand by his stated principles and address the science behind the conventional account of the events of September 11th in the enlightenment spirit of reason and science over faith and politics.

Another brave step in the direction of peace and justice. The importance of such a statement in these times is profound, and must be given the attention it deserves in the media, especially in the U.S. Especially meaningful is the presence of so many Israeli signatories--a reminder that as people we stand united against corrupt and harmful governments be they Israeli, American, British, Saudi or any other.

For a long time I have stressed to anyone who would listen the importance of recognizing that across the illusionary divisions of national borders exists the world's true majority--the people who resist aggression, exploitation, division and hatred. It is imperative at this critical point to actively begin to define a new consciousness, a new type of solidarity independent of ideology. The big ISMs have failed in a big way. Capitalism, Communism, Zionism, Islamism, and so many others that define themselves in opposition to each other have produced nothing but tension the world over. Too long the world's elites have availed themselves of grand ideas in their collective pursuit of power and wealth.

The difficult road that we must all walk together or not at all is being built. Understanding and peace are only possible with truth and the courage to demand it with dignity and in a spirit of healing and reconciliation. There is precious little time left for the silent majority in this world to assume responsibility for the future of humankind. The true meaning of faith is best divined by having faith not in god but in each other. Whatever our beliefs, the realization that we are all connected be it by god, nature, or our common biological ancestry is paramount. An injury to one is an injury to all and regardless of the arguments made on behalf of unconscionable actions, direct or indirect, active or passive, it is our moral obligation if morality has any meaning left, to bring sense back to the world, to face reality, engage it and transform it at whatever cost to ourselves.

I thank those who authored and signed the following statement as one with them in struggle and urge their example be emulated by people everywhere and by partisans of all stripes.

  -GE

>5 August 2006
>
>An Open Letter
>
>Beginning on 12 July 2006 the State of Israel began a massive
>military assault against Lebanon which continues until today. At
>least 900 civilians have been killed. The infrastructure of Lebanon
>has been devastated. Roads, bridges, and the airport have been
>bombed and are not usable. Civilians live under a condition of
>constant bombardment and siege. Homes and villages have been razed
>to the ground. Access to the outside world, to medical care and
>relief, and to resources of food and water is severely compromised.
>
>This assault does not stand alone, but participates in earlier and
>continuing attacks by Israel against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip
>and in the West Bank.
>
>We, Jewish writers, scholars, poets, translators, and artists of
>diverse national origin, offer this open letter in order to
>communicate our solidarity with our Lebanese and Palestinian
>colleagues who are living under siege.
>
>We wish to register before the international community our grave
>concern at the growing violence carried out by the State of Israel
>against the peoples of Lebanon and Palestine. Our concern is
>amplified by the condoning of this violence, and the deaths which
>it has caused, on the part of Jewish leaders, institutions and
>organizations in Israel, Europe, the United States of America and
>elsewhere who have labeled each "collateral damage."
>
>We share our sorrow for all of the lives that have been so uselessly
>damaged and cut short, and recognize that the current attacks by the
>State of Israel form a part of a long history in which Israel has
>sought to dispossess the Palestinian people and to erase from
>memory the history of this dispossession, erecting a state upon the
>ruins of the lives of others.
>
>We reject the logic that the State of Israel and those who speak for
>it require - a logic which demands that human beings be separated
>according to religion, language, nation of origin, and situation of
>ethnic or cultural belonging, and we reject the political
>application of this logic in all of its legal and juridical forms
>and manifestations.
>
>We reject all attempts on the part of the State of Israel, its
>spokespeople, leadership, institutions and political parties, to
>speak on behalf of Jews as such - to speak for our concerns or
>aspirations, for our hopes or fears, for our pasts or for our
>futures.
>
>We affirm that any attempt to impose a military solution upon the
>"Middle East conflict" participates in the violence which initiated
>it. Such measures shall only prolong and amplify the suffering which
>the peoples of the region continue to endure.
>
>Sincerely,
>
>Professor Ammiel Alcalay, Queens College & CUNY Graduate Center, New
>York, USA
>Livia Alexander, New York, NY, USA
>Professor Daniel Amit, Istituto di Fisica, La Sapienza, Roma
>Leeam Azulay-Yagev, New York, NY, USA
>Sigal Barak, Tel Aviv, Israel
>Chana Bloch, Berkeley, CA, USA
>Naomi Braine, Sociologist, New York, NY , USA
>Professor Sally Charnow, Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York,
>USA
>John Comaroff, University of Chicago, American Bar Foundation,
>Chicago, IL, USA
>Professor Alexander Elinson, Hunter College, New York, USA
>Elaine Elinson, San Francisco, CA, USA
>Sulaf Elsalfiti, Engineer, Canada
>Professor David Theo Goldberg, University of California, Irvine, USA
>Brigham M. A hallmark of the real terror network in the world is their curious sense of humor especially involving numbers. As evidence I present to you-- 7/11! No, not the convenience store where "Freedom's Waiting For You" and which is stereotypically staffed by Indians like the Simpsons' Apu, I mean the July 11 bombing of a train in Bombay. At this point in the unraveling of the terror charade of the last five years it seems that the real terrorists have outdone their own penchant for symbolism and cruel humor. I guarantee you that in the fake terror trade journals, 7/11 jokes are all the rage, and the Apu impersonators are finding endless ways to celebrate their fellow conspirators' latest project. Can I just say--there will be SO much hell to pay as soon as the jig is finally up, which looks like it will be sooner rather than later. And can I also say--neither I nor anyone else who has had to pry the truth out of these bastards is going to be at all inclined to listen to any simpering and insincere expressions of contrition or explanations from their apologists. Don't ever ask why, please--you will only make us angrier.

I am not sure why you felt it necessary to vote in favor of the recent resolution supporting Israel in its criminal targeting of civilians in Lebanon. The destruction is grossly unjust, out of proportion, and cruel. Moreover, an understanding of the politics involved reveals that Israel has planned and executed this most recent atrocity as part of a strategy of escalation to a regional war involving the United States.

Finally, all of this was made possible by the crimes of 9/11/01, which the majority of your constituents now know was a sham. We know building 7 did not collapse from fires or damage--it was destroyed with explosives. We know the towers were hit by airplanes and that those impacts and fires alone could not have brought down the towers. There is ample evidence from eyewitnesses of explosions all over the buildings and molten steel seen coming out of the south tower before it fell as well as found in the rubble piles of all three buildings are evidence that jet fuel was not the only source of heat affecting the steel structures. We also know of the vast ring of Israeli spies and other covert operatives who were deported soon after 9/11. We know of Sivan Kurzberg, the Israeli intelligence agent
found celebrating with his team of operatives and taking pictures while the towers burned. We are not amused and we are not happy with the nation you have pleged our support to.

Mike, I find it difficult to believe that a congressman would not already be aware of these facts. Thousands of citizens are waking up daily to this reality--please live up to the oath you took upon assuming office and do not continue to stand by while our nation is destroyed from within and without.

Support for Israel is BAD for America and will not go unchallenged.

Sincerely,

Gustavo Espada

Dear Noam,

You and Amy Goodman... what can I say? You've taught us well about the reality of the Israel/Palestine conflict. With one fatal exception--you believe the US to be behind everything, with Israel as a proxy or "junior partner". Now I'm not saying that Israel calls the shots--you won't be getting any Jewish conspiracies out of me. The world as you know is a complex place, and within that complexity individuals are free to machinate between national borders. That certainly explains the disconnect between American public opinion and the recent vote in Congress upholding Israel's right to commit war crimes against Lebanese civilians. Are the Jews of the world conspiring again, some ask? Or is AIPAC not actually a legitimate representative of the interests of world Jewry? Are the predominantly Jewish neoconservatives egging on our amoral president elected representatives of the world's Jews? No, no, no, no, and no.

Just as some gentiles tell me to support America no matter who is in charge and what they do in my name, so are millions of Jews around the world told with no small amount of arm twisting to support Israel no matter who is in charge or what they do in their name. or if they can't voice their support, just shut up or risk being put on the SHIT list (see http://www.masada2000.org ) along with you and Finkelstein, and probably Amy Goodman too, I admit I don't enjoy visiting that hate-filled site.

It must be hard, I realize, to be villified by other Jews simply for taking a principled and objective stand with regard to the actions of misguided (or worse) politicians and profiteers who claim to speak for all Jews and to define what is in their best interest. It must be difficult for you to see innocent Jews being used as pawns in these criminal acts, as difficult as it is for me to see American kids who remind me of me when I was growing up amidst American embassies, consulates, and military bases being taught lies and hooked by video game warfare in order to make them into the mercenaries of the future.

How hollow it all seems now to me, years after I rode the Metro into Foggy Bottom with my parents and brothers, being shuffled about the corridors of the State Department with the awe that comes naturally to a young boy exposed to the inner workings of the best country in the world. Was it an illusion, after all? Or was there in fact something real and good that has been lost? Those are difficult questions that I nevertheless must find answers for in order to understand myself, Noam, because I think it would be better to die than live a lie. But I do not have to die or live a lie because I choose to look for truth--both the obvious and well-hidden (though not well enough.)

I once believed you to be a relentless truthseeker like me, and your statements in the video that follows would certainly convince most people that you are not afraid of looking for, finding, and/or telling difficult truths. I have also come to believe that you are a man of conscience and not one to knowingly dissemble. I pray, therefore, that you will soon take the step that in your heart I know you are struggling with and come to terms publicly with the need to uncover the keystone of the reality we all currently face and find ourselves in thrall to. You may well harbor some fear in regard to this matter--it is not easy to accept having erred, much less take a step into the unknown. Have faith, Noam, in those who have grown from your teaching--no one lives forever, and there are many children alive today who will never live past childhood. In your long life you have seen and lived through and fought to prevent many a tragedy--this may be the worst one yet--please don't fail now. Open your eyes and see the truth, then open your mouth and speak it. All of it.

Our soldiers are dying, today, and
every day. This is now. We can revisit your issue after we get our
troops home. Y'all are sucking all the energy out of the antiwar
movement and it is VERY DETREMENTAL to what we are trying to do.
>
> We all have things that interest us, other than ending the war.
Most of us pursue those things on our own. I appreciate your
(plural) passion but believe me when I say that this 9-11 obsession
is not helping us get our troops home.
>

Let me say first, to be clear, that the following response to Cindy
Sheehan and her associates reflects my own views and not necessarily
those of anyone who tolerates my posting on their lists. I say that
because I think the following needs to be said nonetheless:

Hey Cindy, Casey is DEAD! 9-11 victims are dying today and every day as
cancers caused by the toxic cloud work their black magic inside the
lungs of REAL heroes, not misguided kids who blindly rushed off
to "kill ragheads". We can revisit the issue of whether Casey and the
other "Gold Star" kids should be mourned or scorned for their blind
obedience to propaganda, but right now we're trying to stop World War 3
from continuing to escalate. How DARE you or any of your associates
tell US that OUR WORK is very detremental [sic] to what you are trying
to do. Maybe if you had been a better parent then not only you but a
significant number of Afghani, Iraqi, and now Lebanese families
wouldn't be mourning. How DARE you dismiss our concerns as hurting
your cause when it's clear that you are banging your heads against a
wall that you are not going to break, perhaps because you can't bear
the thought of your dead childrens' noble post-9/11 intentions having
been a fools' errand even before "Bush Lied and People Died" over non-
existent WMDs. Did you ever stop to think that if you had not
dismissed us as kooks for years after 9/11 that Casey would still be
alive? How can you not see that the only way to uproot our lost
children from their new homes and graves in the middle east is to
EXPOSE THE FRAUD COMPLETELY. YOU, Ms. Sheehan, and your associates are
standing in the way and drawing energy away from the only effort that
will bring our troops home and YES, MORE IMPORTANTLY stop them killing
innocent people and creating the animosity that may one day claim
someone else's child? Can you PLEASE STOP DRAWING attention away from
our important work? We KNOW your story. We pity your family's sad
fate. But YOU ARE HELPING MURDERERS with your showboating and
blindered activism because you have fallen for your own rhetoric. You
are working within the same sick system that killed your son, the same
sick system that uses people like you to enable them to continue
killing and maming and raping 14 year old girls. Join our calls,
Cindy, or stand aside. Your antiwar movement has failed. YOU have
failed. And the price of allowing you to continue your fruitless
crusade is much too high. CINDY SHEEHAN, GET A CLUE OR STEP ASIDE.

Oh yeah, Cindy--I made this video http://www.hipj.net/O292OO5.wmv from your
speech in Boston Common because you inspired me. You have since
disappointed me and many others since with your silence on the issue of
9/11. It would be a shame if I had to re-edit it to reflect your
betrayal, but I will if you and your associates continue to get in our
way.

The assumption of the life and death gamblers here is simple--Americans, faced with choosing sides in a war deliberately started by Israel, will choose not to support Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran (in that order, yes.) I wouldn't be so sure. I, for one, do not support Israel in this obvious sequel to America's own wars of aggression. I also doubt that most Americans, who are now rightly questioning what 9-11 was and what it was meant to bring about (a false flag attack framing muslims in order to launch this American/Israeli--or is it Israeli/American--campaign of conquest and regime change across the middle east) are going to rush out to buy little Israeli flag stickers to put on their cars.

The desired outcome (since it's the only realistic one) is a middle east that will soon resemble Iraq--too caught up in its internal divisions to stop the fighting, and also unwilling to allow puppet governments to take root. Americans will be further divided, and the so-called Patriot Act will have to be brought out in force in order to keep dissenters at bay as the illegitimate Bush government continues to sell our future and our children down the river thanks to Israel.

Anyone who thinks that there is anything but chaos down this road is sadly and tragically mistaken. Anyone who thinks that propaganda and PR campaigns are going to buoy American support for an obviously Israeli war having nothing to do with America's interests has not been paying attention to Bush's poll ratings. Anyone who thinks that Israel is not going to emerge as a disastrous political issue in America is hoping beyond reason. Our troops in Iraq have been made sitting ducks and will be the ones--not Israelis--paying the highest price for Israel's aggression. The neocons think that Americans will yet again rally to support the troops and by extension, Israel. I don't think that is going to happen, and the consequences are not going to be pleasant for anyone.

But don't take my word for it, see what a former Reaganite has to say:

Paul Craig Roberts: 'Attention deficit Americans are being misled to war'
Posted on Saturday, July 15 @ 10:33:25 EDT
This article has been read 5211 times.

Paul Craig Roberts

A terrible thing is happening, and not enough Americans are aware to be able to do anything about it. Zionists in Israel and in the Bush administration are leading America into war with Iran, Syria, Hizbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine. The consequences for America, Israel and the Middle East will be disastrous, but as long as Washington is in thrall to Zionist paranoia, nothing can be done about it. Bush made this clear on July 14 when he rejected the plea from Lebanon's prime minister to pressure Israel to stop its attack on Lebanon.

The war began when Bush's neoconservative government invaded Afghanistan and Iraq under the pretense of "fighting terrorism." Neither front has gone well for America. The Israelis, seeing the growing domestic opposition to Bush's wars of choice, concluded that they are in danger of losing America's military intervention in behalf of their Middle East interests. Israel decided to force the issue.

Israel did this by bombing and invading Gaza, from which they had just withdrawn as part of a "Palestinian settlement." Israel's pretext was the capture of one Israeli soldier in Gaza in retribution for Israel's genocidal policies toward Palestine. Few Americans know that Israel has forced Palestinians into ghettos and walled them off from their farm lands, schools, and medical treatment.

By slaughtering scores of civilians and destroying the infrastructure of the fragile land in response to the capture of one Israeli soldier, Israel has made it clear that its policy is fire and sword.

Under international law - the identical law that was used to try Nazi war criminals after World War II - Israel's invasion of Gaza is a monstrous war crime. The United Nations top humanitarian official, Jan Egeland, said that Israel's attacks on civilians and infrastructure violated international law.

On July 13, the UN Security Council tried to condemn Israel for its criminal invasion of Gaza, but US Ambassador John Bolton, a rabid pro-Israeli zealot, vetoed the Security Council resolution that would have required Israel to halt its illegal and criminal actions in Gaza. Bolton is the UN ambassador who could not get confirmed even in a Republican Senate and was given a recess appointment by Bush in defiance of Congress.

On July 12, Israel invaded Lebanon. The pretext was the capture of two Israeli soldiers in Israeli-occupied Lebanese territory by Hizbollah. In two days Israel has slaughtered scores of Lebanese civilians, destroyed bridges and power plants, attacked the Beruit International Airport and blocked Lebanese ports.

Israel's over-reactions are calculated to start a wider war. Israel has asserted that the two soldiers captured by Hizbollah are being held in Iran. Israel blames Syria for Hizbollah's acts. Both Israel and its neoconsevative allies in the Bush government blame Iran and Syria for "attacks on Israel" by Hamas and Hizbollah. No one, least of all Bush, blames Israel's Palestinian policy.

Israel's American agents, the neoconservatives, have made it clear for years that their goal is to eliminate every Middle Eastern government that is not ruled by an American puppet friendly to Israel. The people who hold the important positions in Bush's government have frankly stated this position over and over. For example, a decade ago in 1996 a group of American neoconservatives who have comprised much of the sub-cabinet in the Bush administration wrote that Israel could gain American sympathy by blaming aggression on Hizbollah, Syria, and Iran and then seizing the strategic initiative by "engaging Hizbollah, Syria, and Iran as the principal agents of aggression in Lebanon."

First, however, Iraq would have to be taken out. The first focus, said the neocons, should be "on removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq - an important Israeli strategic objective in its own right."

Gentle reader, does it not strike you as strange that US citizens, most of whom have held presidential appointments in the Bush administration, are so concerned to plan how Israel can draw upon US blood and treasure to achieve Israel's objectives in the Middle East?

We certainly have to hand it to Israel and its American neoconsevative agents. They have succeeded on entirely false pretenses in launching two wars in the Middle East and now they have prepared the ground for a general conflagration.

Who is to stop them? The Condi Rice State Department? Be serious.

The Democratic Party? What a laugh!

The power mad Republicans who have sold their souls?

The Christian Evangelicals who believe the destruction of huge numbers of people in the Middle East is the lead up to "the Rapture" in which they will be wafted up to Heaven?

The UN Security Council, where the US never fails to veto any resolution or sanction against Israel?

The US and Israel haven't the troops needed to defeat and occupy Syria, Hizbollah and Iran with conventional forces. Pentagon documents have described two ways in which the Middle East can be secured for Israel. One is the use of nuclear weapons. The other is the destruction of all infrastructure - power plants, water and sewage systems, hospitals, schools, roads, bridges, ports, and a reduction of much housing to rubble by powerful conventional bombs. In other words, an air war that never ends.

Most Americans are incapable of identifying their own US Representative and Senators. Everything they "know" about the Middle East comes from Israeli propaganda: Israel is the innocent victim, and all Arabs are terrorists with suicide bombs.

America is being led by a handful of traitors into participating in "regime change" that might succeed or might dethrone our bought and paid for puppets in Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. If Pakistan were to fall to Islamist forces, Muslims would have a nuclear capability as a counterpart to Israel's and America's.

Muslims have many reasons to hate us for generations of oppression and interference in their internal affairs. As Iraq has proven, it is not easy to break their spirit. Out-gunned and out-manned, they still resist, motivated by anger and pride.

Many Americans may think that "ragheads" mean nothing to them. But when $200 oil means Americans cannot commute to their jobs in their gas-guzzlers from their far-flung suburbs, or Russia and China intervene because American-Israeli interests conflict with their own, the world becomes a different place for inattentive, uninvolved, complicit Americans.

Dr. Roberts is John M. Sure, America has been betrayed in the past. Israel has repeatedly conducted espionage against the U.S. Israel’s government has sold and shared U.S. classified military technology with our competitors and enemies. Israel has even attacked us militarily a time or two. The most flamboyant of the Israeli attacks on her loyal benefactor was the 1967 attempt to sink the U.S.S. Liberty, including all souls on board. Was there a message here?

As the Pentagon franticly designs some kind of reasonable US citizen evacuation plan for the 25,000 Americans in Lebanon, while trying to ensure safety and tactical advantage for the entire Middle East deployment, surely intelligent men and women in the service of the United States share doubtful glances as they receive their orders. As the U.S. Marine Corps kicks into high gear, it does so with a foreboding memory of the last time we went to Beirut in response to an aggressive Israeli security strategy

Israel’s hawks have long recognized that the co-optation, or barring that, the destruction of Iraq was necessary for a more permanent approach, the clean break, the assertion of Israel’s monopoly of force in the Middle East. Our country, for only two trillion dollars and a few hundred thousand dead and maimed on all sides, has facilitated the destruction of Iraq.

Were we really needed for the next phase, launched this week?

I think not. My sense is that the reasonable minds in Washington, New York, and around the world had succeeded in maintaining a compromise of a long corrupted American foreign policy in the Middle East, dating from before the Carter Doctrine. The compromise was, and is, that we would permanently base within and preside over a shattered Iraq, but would support no further expansion of the war into Israel’s second phase target, Syria, or her third phase target, Iran.

I suspect that my conclusion was shared by those controlling Israel’s foreign policy. "A Clean Break" – the strategy apparently being implemented before our eyes – was not only about Israel’s security. It was very significantly about Israel’s independence from the United States.

Many in America oppose the U.S. knee-jerk, unquestioning support for Israel. Many more worry that the Israeli lobby is unusually influential in Washington, while remaining hidden and unaccountable to average Americans. Still others are alarmed that Israel’s constant war mentality has become our new American model, and that Iraq and our own borders have become our own occupied territories, teeming with terror and constituting a never-ending threat to our lives, prosperity and value system.

Some even wonder why no-one has told President George W. Bush that we do not currently have any treaties or formal alliances of defense with Israel – and that if Bush wishes to defend Israel against her enemies, he will either need to personally don a uniform and get on an airplane to Tel Aviv, or else defy the Constitution yet again.

However, there may be a bit of good news in this story. That uniquely Christian idea that we may be graced when we do not deserve it may be in evidence here, amidst the terror and hate we ourselves have facilitated in the Middle East.

If we can pierce the emotion, we may recognize that with Israel’s independent action this week – a cruel slap to her perceived enemies, and a betrayal of American interests in the Middle East – she has indeed progressed into a new phase of independence.

She has achieved a clean break. For many years, Israel has been completely competent to behave as a nation among nations, but she has, as American and European mothers and fathers know only too well, been afflicted with we facetiously call "failure to launch."

She has wanted a generous parent on the Security Council, to provide warmth and aid, validation and protection, a sympathetic ear and a devoted advocacy. Perhaps, as Israel executes her "Clean Break," America – led by the next Congress of the United States – can finally begin to truly celebrate Israel’s independence, and like tired parents, reorganize our own lives and objectives and dreams accordingly.

Bush
as a "Yalely frat boy" who is in over his head and more corrupt than
Richard Nixon.

Linklater also says that his efforts to disseminate documentaries
which point the finger at the US government for involvement in 9/11
have changed paradigms for several A-list Hollywood stars - including
Bruce Willis.

During a nationally syndicated radio interview, Linklater told host
Alex Jones that the actions of the Bush administration were, "The
most extreme I've seen in my lifetime - in American history - this
kind of executive branch grab of power is so unprecedented - it's
frightening."

Saying his film was a political statement, Linklater said that the
abuses of the Bush administration were, "So extreme that people don't
even know what to do - how do you comment - how do you voice your
opposition?"

Asked if he would accept an invitation to view the film at the White
House with the President, Linklater was adamant.

"Absolutely not - I've met George Bush before when he was Governor,"
said Linklater - describing him as a "Yaley frat boy."

"Man, is he in over his head as the President of the United States -
that's your worst combination of someone not prepared with their
impulses being almost wrong every time - it's painful to watch as a
Texan."

Linklater outlined the kind of watchdog role Americans should assume -
a necessity that his latest film warns against the consequences of
abandoning.

"That's our role, that's our duty - that's what the founding fathers
certainly wanted - a kind of a robust dialogue where everyone's a
little unsatisfied - what we have now is a small group who are very
satisfied - they've taken total control," said Linklater.

"Once you own the media and the outlets and you can control the
debate to such a large degree, I wonder if the dissenting voices can
even be heard."

Linklater agreed that Bush had dwarfed the crimes of Nixon
commenting, "Nixon's a liberal compared to Bush - at least he cared
about air quality, drinking water, things like that."

Linklater said he had handed out DVD's on set which carried claims
that 9/11 was perpetrated by the US government to erect a police
state to Bruce Willis, one of the stars of Linklater's upcoming Fast
Food Nation.

"He said it put him in such a head space that he will be quiet on
issues of national policy."

Linklater said Willis had told him in an e mail that the videos had
changed his entire political paradigm.

"Bruce is a pretty thinking radical kind of guy," said Linklater.

A Scanner Darkly, an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick book that
includes themes of total surveillance and the loss of freedom, is set
in the short-term future after the US has lost the war on drugs.
Starring Keanu Reeves, Wynona Rider, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downy
Jnr. - the film is enjoying positive reviews as it slowly rolls out
across the country.

Ok, how about you give us a list of the freshmen who took your class on 9/11 last year--surely one of them could easily trounce these moonbats in a debate and settle this nasty "inside job" business once and for all. See the contact info below, and put your mouth where your money is -- how much does an ERNEST senior adviser to a whitewash commission get paid, if I MAY?? - GE

July 11, 2006

To all who have supported me on free speech and/or 9/11 truth,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your letters to the university, the media, and the politicians are what made it possible for the Provost’s office to do the right thing. Many of you argued that people who question the official story of 9/11 are not crazy, but patriotic Americans doing their duty as informed citizens. Others argued that university instructors should not be fired for their political opinions. You won both arguments. Congratulations! Don’t forget to thank Provost Patrick Farrell.

There is one more argument left to win. Is the 9/11 Commission Report an adequate official record of the most important historical event of the 21st century? This argument will be an easy one for us to win, as anyone familiar with David Griffin’s demolition of that “571-page lie” knows. We need a prominent public forum for this debate. And we need an opponent.

So far nobody has been willing to step up and defend the official story in a free and open debate. Jim Fetzer and the Scholars for 9/11 Truth debate team are still looking for opponents for the National 9/11 Debate next September 16th in South Carolina. And Jim and I are looking for people in Wisconsin to serve as sparring partners to help Jim warm up for the big match. So far we’re not having much luck. Professor Donald Downs, who considers the 9/11 revisionist case “absurd” and “beyond the pale,” has backed down, and now says he does not want to defend his position in free and open debate. He claims that he cannot continue to argue for academic freedom while also publicly arguing in favor of the official story of 9/11. I do not understand his reasons for this, but I welcome his clear, cogent statement in support of academic freedom.

We are going to have a local debate on 9/11 even if we have to debate an empty chair. Truth TV, a new 9/11 truth show Thursday night show (11 p.m.) on Madison’s WYOU-TV, cable channel 4, has agreed to provide a venue. (Other local and national media outlets are also welcome to invite us to use their facilities and to broadcast the debate!) We will be announcing a date for upcoming 9/11 debates. Jim Fetzer and/or Kevin Barrett will argue against the 9/11 Commission Report. We will choose the most qualified person we can find to defend the official story. If nobody is willing to step forward, we will debate an empty chair, thereby proving that the pro-9/11 Commission case is so weak that none dare defend it.

I challenge Mark Green, Donald Downs, Jim Doyle, Steve Nass, Jessica McBride, or anyone else who is willing to make a fool of themselves in public to take up our challenge and defend the 9/11 Commission Report using logic and facts, not name-calling and threats.

Anyone willing to defend the 9/11 Commission Report is invited to contact Scholars for 9/11 Truth or Kevin Barrett.

Truth will prevail!

Kevin Barrett

Lecturer, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Instructor, Edgewood College of Madison

PS Since I’ve been taking this whole thing with a grain of humor, here is a joke from my friend Mike Cook of Kentucky.
